Cherry picker hire cost Australia — what you’ll actually pay

By the Be Up Hire team · Updated July 2026
Our 35ft trailer-mounted cherry picker is $250/day ex-GST. Delivery is $165 each way — or tow it yourself with a braked towbar and a normal car licence and pay nothing for transport. Self-propelled knuckle booms (the machines most sites mean by “cherry picker”) run $250–$500/day plus delivery.

What is a cherry picker, exactly?

“Cherry picker” is the everyday name for any boom-type lift with a basket on the end — the machines the industry calls boom lifts or knuckle booms. If you’re picturing a bucket on an articulating arm reaching up and over something, that’s the one. The trailer-mounted version tows behind a ute; the self-propelled versions drive themselves around site. Same job, different money.

The tow-it-yourself saving

This is the biggest lever on a cherry picker job. Transport on a self-propelled boom is $200–$450 each way — on a short hire that can cost more than the machine. The trailer unit skips it entirely if you’ve got a braked towbar; no truck licence, no special permit, just a standard car licence to tow it.

One day of over-reach, towed yourself:

35ft trailer cherry picker 1 × $250 = $250
Transport = $0

Total: $250 ex-GST

Same day, delivered:

Hire 1 × $250 = $250
Delivery + pickup 2 × $165 = $330

Total: $580 ex-GST

Compare: 34ft self-propelled knuckle, 2 days:

Hire 2 × $250 = $500
Delivery + pickup 2 × $200 = $400

Total: $900 ex-GST (plus diesel at $4/L)

When is the trailer unit the wrong call?

Licence check before you book

In Victoria, any boom-type lift with 11m or more reach needs a WP high-risk work licence — that includes the 35ft trailer unit and everything above it. A harness is mandatory in the basket. Scissor lifts need no licence. Full rules in the EWP licence guide, and rates for everything on the rates page.

Common questions

Can I tow the cherry picker with my ute?

Almost certainly — you need a braked towbar and a tow rating that covers the unit, and a standard car licence. Most dual-cabs and larger utes qualify. Tell us your vehicle when you book and we’ll confirm.

Do I need a licence to operate it?

Yes — the 35ft trailer unit reaches over 11m, so a WP high-risk work licence applies in Victoria, same as the self-propelled booms. The harness in the basket is mandatory too.

Is a cherry picker the same as a boom lift?

Yes — “cherry picker” is the everyday word, “boom lift” or “knuckle boom” is the industry word. Hire companies list the same machines under both names. Our boom lift cost guide covers the full range.
